How to Select Hospitalization & Surgical Insurance in Malaysia (also known as medical & health Insurance or medical card insurance in Malaysia)

Q: Who can apply for Hospitalization & Surgical (H&S) Insurance? A: Normally, anyone between 1 month and 60 years old may apply for H&S insurance. Only a few insurance companies allowed enrolment for people up to 65 years old.
Q: What is the scope of coverage for H&S insurance? A: Worldwide, 24 hours coverage.
Q: Who can buy H&S insurance? A: Baby from 1 month to 60 year old adult are eligible to apply for H&S insurance in Malaysia.
Q: How long does H&S insurance covered? A: Majority of H&S insurance covered up to age 65. Some H&S insurance covered up to age 70. However, there are only a few H&S insurance provide coverage up to age 75. Very small amount of H&S insurance covered till 80 years old.

Q: What are the Types of Policy Renewal Conditions? A: The are three types of policy renewal conditions namely: i) Renewal at the option of policyholder (formerly the common wording use are ‘guaranteed renewal’) ii) Conditional guaranteed renewal iii) Yearly renewal.

Q: Are premium rates for H&S guaranteed? A: No, premium rates are not guaranteed because it is age-banded in accordance with the attainable age of policyholder at the time of renewal. The Insurance companies reserve the right to change the premium rates.
Q: What types of cancers are excluded in the Outpatient Cancer Treatment? A: i) Carcinoma in situ including of the cervix; ii) Ductal Carcinoma in situ of the breast; iii) Papillary Carcinoma of the bladder & Stage 1 Prostate Cancer; iv) All skin cancers except malignant melanoma; v) Stage 1 Hodgkin’s disease; vi) Tumours manifesting as complications of AIDS.

Q: Is pre-ex isting health conditions covered? A: Pre-existing health conditions shall mean disabilities that you have reasonable knowledge of. You may be considered to have reasonable knowledge of a pre-existing condition where the condition is one for which:-
i) you had received or is receiving treatment; ii) medical advice, diagnosis, care or treatment has been recommended to you; iii) clear and distinct symptoms are or were evident; or iv) its existence would have been apparent to a reasonable person in the circumstances.
Q: Is medical examination required for H&S insurance? A: Generally, medical examination is not required for H&S insurance application, however, the insurance company reserves the right to request for it. The medical examination fee for standalone H&S insurance is to be borne by the applicant.
Many life insurance companies absorb the medical examination fee if you purchase H&S insurance which is attached to investment-linked insurance, whole life insurance or term insurance.
Q: If I transfer my H&S insurance from one insurance company to another, will the new insurance company waive the 30 days waiting period? A: ‘Takeover’ practice is allowed by Bank Negara Malaysia (Central Bank of Malaysia), however, most insurance companies does not consider takeover case from other insurance companies.
If the new insurance company does not consider takeover case, it means the 30 days waiting period will have to start all over again. Try to find out which insurance companies practice takeover case if you really want to transfer your H&S insurance to another company. No harm to negotiate with the insurance company to find out a fair terms and conditions.
