How to Select Hospitalization & Surgical Insurance in Malaysia

(also known as medical & health Insurance or medical card insurance in Malaysia)

Additional H&S Insurance Benefits

Besides having the common benefits mentioned above, each H&S insurance plan has its own unique features. You can’t find a H&S insurance plan which has all the unique features together.

Examples of unique features are as follow:

Hospital cash benefit (e.g. RM100 per disability, RM100 per day)

You are entitled to a ONE time lump sum cash payment e.g. RM100 per disability or RM100 per day to cover any incidental out-of-pocket expenses.

Exclsuion:

Some insurers will pay if you are hospitalizing due to ACCIDENT only. Some insurers provide this benefit with excess (e.g. first day of hospitalization is not entitled to this benefit).

Our opinion:

You might feel happy when receiving cash from your insurance company when you are hospitalize. But remember; don’t let minor benefit like this divert your attention when choosing H&S insurance.

Daily cash allowance at Government hospital (e.g. RM50 per day)

You will receive daily cash allowance if you are confined to a government hospital.

Exclusion:

This benefit will not be payable if you are confine to a Room & Board (e.g. RM120 per day) which is higher than the H&S insurance (e.g. RM100 per day) you purchased.

No payment will be made for any transfer to or form any private and government hospital.

Daily cash allowance is not payable by some insurance companies in Malaysia if you were to hospitalize at semi-government hospitals e.g. HUKM.

Out-patient physiotherapy treatment

Reimbursement of the charges of physiotherapy treatment which is recommended in writing by the attending Physician within e.g. 90 days after discharged from hospital.

In-patient physiotherapy treatment charges will be reimbursed under the Hospital Supplies & Services benefits.

The cost of physiotherapy at government hospital is RM2 per session and above RM100 for private hospitals. Since there are too many patients waiting at Government hospitals. Some of Government hospitals only allow patient to do physiotherapy treatment once every two week.

In-hospital treatment for mental illness

Reimbursement of the charges for mental illness treatment while confined to a hospital as an in-patient.

‘Mental illness’ means a nervous disorder or the functional disorder of the psychic or mental constitution including any physiological or psychosomatic manifestations which necessitate you to be confined in hospital for the medically required treatment.

Home nursing care (e.g. RM1000 per disability, RM100 per day )

Reimbursement of charges incurred for the services of a government licensed nurse in your house for the continued treatment of the specific medical condition for which you were hospitalized. Such services must be recommended by the attending physician.

This benefit is payable only if the care is provided under an established and periodically reviewed service within 7 days from hospital discharge subject to a minimum of 3 days hospitalization.

Besides the service of a nurse, some insurance companies provide a wider scope of home nursing care benefits which include physical, occupational or speech therapies by a registered therapist and medical social services provided under the direct supervision of a medical practitioner.
